The Free SHS Secretariat has revealed that under the Free Senior High School programme 30% of places in the 55 “Category A” Senior High Schools (SHSs) throughout the country are mandatorily reserved for candidates from public basic schools.
The Secretariat explained that the 30% slots are reserved for candidates from government Junior High School (JHS) who have performed excellently at the Basic Education for Certificate Examination (BECE).
According to a bulletin from Free SHS Secretariat and copied to websaet.com, the government is of the view that this policy will ultimately help narrow the social divide that has perpetuated itself in this country over the years and thus promote social mobility.
Free SHS is a policy of the government of Ghana (GoG), which started in September 2017. The programme ensures that every child in Ghana who qualifies for and is placed in a public Senior High School for his secondary education will have his/her fees absorbed by the government.
