A San Diego County deputy was arrested for driving through a military base gate, officials said
A San Diego County sheriff’s deputy was arrested on suspicion of drink driving after he drove through the main gate of a military base Friday night without stopping, the Sheriff’s Department said. The incident occurred at Coronado Naval Base.
Sgt. The Sheriff’s Department said in a news release that Michael Cruz, who had been with the sheriff’s department since 2006, was off duty at the time of the accident.
Cruz has been placed on administrative leave, the Sheriff’s Department said, while the Coronado Police Department and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigate the incident.
A military spokesperson said the Coronado Naval Base was closed Friday night after the vehicle drove through the facility’s main gate without stopping.
Naval Base Coronado spokesman Kevin Dixon KNSD-TV said that base guards arrested the driver after the “gateway runner” walked non-stop through the entrance to Naval Air Station North Island, part of Naval Base Coronado.
KNSD-TV reported that several patrol cars surrounded the entrance near Third and Alameda Streets in Coronado around 10:30 p.m.
Dixon said multiple gates at the air terminal near San Diego were locked while security personnel checked the facility.
“The main gate at the North Island Naval Air Station is currently closed due to a security incident. Please stay away from the main gate while security investigates,” a post on the Naval Base Coronado’s Facebook page said early Saturday.
later that morning, Read another post on Facebook“Gate 2 (Carrier Gate) is now open to inbound and outbound vehicular traffic. The main outbound gate at 4th Street is open to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The inbound main gate remains closed due to security activity.”
Naval Air Station North Island is one of eight US military installations that make up Coronado Naval Base.
In February 2022, a motorist was found carrying bomb-making materials at the same gate as the base. The base said at the time that the material had not been compiled into a machine and the driver was being held for questioning.
