A TRAVESTY IN THE MAKING – GES TRANSFERS BOKASSA AND ONE OTHER FROM MOTOWN???
By: Akora Neil Armstrong-Mortagbe (OAA 1987)
Good day, Akora,
I trust we are all keeping well and safe as we continue to navigate the tortuous path of the Covid 19 pandemic.
And as if Covid 19 was not enough of a challenge, my heart skipped several beats when I chanced on information of the imminent transfer of two teachers, who have been critical to the academic success of scores of Students who have passed through the hallowed walls of our Grey City of the Outlaws Hill.
Yes, our very own “Emperor” Bokassa (who generations of our successors, including my son in SHS 3, now simply call “Kassa”) is, by some administrative procedure, being transferred from the school that nurtured him and to whom he has dedicated his ENTIRE ADULT LIFE!!
Whilst I do not know him personally, in my interactions with the students, they speak so highly of their ICT Master, Mr. Ankomah. They tell of how he makes the study of ICT so practical and exciting. This teacher is the second teacher being transferred.
Both Messrs Ekow Asamoah and Ankomah have become integral to the school’s successes in Math and ICT. Their dedication to the students, their duties and the school are unquestionable. It is inconceivable that they are being asked to proceed on transfer at this time when Students are already having to deal with the psychological difficulties occasioned by Covid 19.
I understand that the directive informing them about the transfer is based on “qualification “. And, over here, I can speak of Bokassa from a comprehensively informed position having known him since I entered Form 1 in 1982!
As Students in Motown at the time, our lives were indelibly impacted by the leadership of Senior Prefect Ekow Asamoah!!! After leaving the school and getting involved in OAA activities, I saw at first hand the selflessness of Bokassa. I have heard generations of Students eulogizing this true son of Achimota School!!
In context, any move to transfer Bokassa from the school, with only 4 years left for him to honourably retire, would be a travesty!! After all, he’s not teaching in a University.
Indeed with this same “qualification”, he’s taught generations of Achimotan students at both the A’Level and SHS3, who have gone on to attend some of the best Universities in the world.
And speaking about qualifications, I learn that he (Bokassa) and a few teachers in Achimota, have just completed a continuous professional development training with Harvard University, no less, this year. How many people in the entire GES system have that, I dare ask?
I hereby launch this campaign to arrest this move, no matter how much the Ghana Education Service seeks to justify it. Transferring one of the school’s best Math teachers (if not THE BEST) after 30 years plus of STERLING Service to ONE SCHOOL SURELY CAN NOT BE RIGHT. HE DOESN’T DESERVE THIS!!!
And come to think of it, I can not fathom the thinking that went into asking KEY TEACHERS OF FINAL YEAR STUDENTS TO LEAVE THE SCHOOL AT A TIME WHEN THESE STUDENTS ARE JUST ABOUT READYING THEMSELVES TO WRITE THE WASSCE EXAMS IN THIS COVID 19 PANDEMIC ERA!!!! THIS IS UNCONSCIONABLE!!!
I call on every single Akora to join this call and resist this with every fiber of our beings!!! To join this cause, kindly contact the author of this piece via any of the following:
