Campus: UHAS Parliament halts ongoing SRC and local NUGS elections

The SRC Parliament of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) has terminated the ongoing SRC and Local NUGS elections in the school.

This came as a blow on the various candidates and the student body to learn that an earlier decision to have the elections conducted has been dismissed.

After the virtual reading of their manifestos, the expectations of the candidates were not met, a development which has caused extreme unrest in the Institution.

The Electoral Commissioner, in a meeting with the SRC and NUGS candidates in May, resolved to elect the 2020/2021 leaders online, a decision which was not meant to see the light of day.

For the Electoral Commission, the exercise could not be carried out due to limited period of time, adding that per a survey conducted ahead of the polls, it would not be feasible to have the electronic elections.

Each of the candidates is expected to receive GHS 90.00 as compensation, as well as a refund of the cost of filing their nominations.

Although the academic year is yet to end, acting leaders have been appointed to steer the affairs of student management body, what some student activists believe is a an effort by the Student Representative Council, led by the President, Abraham Norman Nortey to get their cronies lead the over 3,000 students in the next academic year.

Whereas some of the candidates have petitioned the Registrar, Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Students over the matter, others are threatening to stage peaceful demonstrations against the SRC.

It is likely that a judicial redress in an external court of jurisdiction will be sought to find lasting solutions to the rising chaos in the University.
