COLTEK Produces 4,000 Face Masks for Distribution to UEW Staff, Other Stakeholder Institutions

With support from the Management of the College of Technology Education, Kumasi (COLTEK), the Department of Fashion Design and Textile Education (DFDTE) of the Faculty of Vocational Education (FVE) has produced about 4,000 face masks for free distribution in the University community as an added measure the COLTEK Management is implementing to combat the novel COVID-19 pandemic.

The masks are being distributed to members in the COLTEK Community as well as the Ajumako, Winneba and Ashanti Mampong campuses of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), and other key stakeholder institutions.

The other beneficiaries include Tex Styles Ghana Limited (GTP) and the Ministry of Education (MoE) through the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET).

The Head of Medical Services at COLTEK, Dr. Ato Kwamena Sagoe is collaborating with the DFDTE to produce the high standard face masks to meet the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Government of Ghana prescribed standards to combat COVID-19.

Few weeks into the production, the DFDTE with its skeletal staff has managed to produce about 4,000 face masks, the majority of which have already been distributed. About 600 of the number produced, have been supplied to UEW’s College of Agriculture (CAGRIC) at Asante-Mampong, 500 apiece to the Winneba Campus and MoE, and 100 pieces to GTP.

The remaining pieces have mainly been distributed to COLTEK staff and other members in the environs of the College.

The Head of the Fashion Department under the Faculty of Vocational Education (FVE), Dr. Josephine A. Ntiri explained that the two designs (the curve and pleated) produced by the Department underwent very rigorous processes under the supervision of COLTEK Management and Dr. Sagoe to ensure that they meet specifications of the Ghana Health Service and the Ghana Standards Board.

On his part, Dr. Sagoe emphasised the quality of the face masks being produced for staff and encouraged staff to show commitment in using them to prevent the continued spread of the virus. He indicated that there is growing evidence of asymptomatic infections in the country and therefore, stressed the need for all to strictly abide by the safety protocols to avoid coming into contact with the virus.

He, also, cautioned staff against the temptation to grow a false sense that face masks alone can provide the needed security against COVID-19 infection and thus, reduce adherence to the other preventive protocols including social distancing, respiratory and personal hygiene as well as the frequent use of alcohol-based hand sanitisers or washing hands with soap under running water.

Some COLTEK Staff have commended Management for the proactive manner it has generally handled the COVID-19 situation at the College.

Some of them described as thoughtful, Management’s move to produce face masks for distribution to staff, provide hand sanitisers in all offices, position Veronica buckets at vantage place on campus, among others.
