The 26th Games of the Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) will start at the University of Ghana (UG), Legon campus today.
The case, called’ Legon 2020,’ will take place under the theme’ Integrating Sport into Youth Empowerment and Growth Academy’ and will be under the esteemed patronage of UG Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu.
In all, the Games will contend with 11 institutions. These include the host University UG, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the University of Cape Coast (UCC), the University of Education, the University of Winneba (UEW), the University of Development Studies (UDS) and the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT).
We will participate in football, badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, soccer, goalball, handball, hockey, and tennis disciplines.
Talented athletes such as the best student-athlete in Africa and champion of the African Games, Benjamin Azamati and the 400-meter bronze winner in the African Games, Grace Obour from UG, Edwin Gadayi from UCC, Neeyi Akesseh from UEW, Kate Agyeman and Rafiatu Nuhu from UDS would also be there.
Together with their staff, the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) headed by Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo (Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Educational and Student Affairs) and her deputy Dr Bella Bello Bitugu launched developments such as karaoke and film nights, live broadcast of soccer matches, indoor and outdoor sports and variety shows.
According to the LOC, the plan was to help participants and officials recover after the day’s events and also build life-long relationships while they try to host a memorable event.
Nevertheless, the official opening ceremony will take place at the UG Main Field on Monday at 1 pm.
A soccer match between UG and GIMPA will proceed.
