Mfantsipim breaks a gap of 5 years to win Central Super Zonal Athletics
Mfantisipim School won the 2020 Super Zonal Athletics Championship with competition from the holders of St. Augustine’s College and 30 other second-cycle colleges and institutions
‘Kwabotwe’ were dominant in the two-day competition held at the Schools and Colleges Park in Cape Coast, winning gold medals in flagship events and amassing more points with an increasing number in sprints, long-distance and short-distance final events.
St. Augustine’s College entered the competition this year because defending champions retained the overall trophy since 2016, although they did not meet their rivals who, after collecting 158 points, found a way back to the top of the zone.
The St. Augustine College had 56 more points than the second with a 152 point score. The 3rd place finish was in Adisadel College with 86 points, the 4th with 29.5 points in Aggrey Memorial.
The win means the red and black boys reclaim number one position in the zone for the first time since 2015. The Mfantsipim show was spearheaded by amazing talent – Aziz Mohammed who singlehandedly won gold medals in 800m, 1,500m, 5,000m and 800 medley amongst others on the day.
The final year Student of the Mfantsipim School emerged the best male athlete of the meet organized under very competitive circumstances.
In the ladies’ event, Holy Child School topped the log after a spirited performance from their surprise star athlete, Pearl Awanya, inspired them to total points build up 154 points. Awanya swept four gold medals across events to ensure Holy child school was back amongst the best after a long break.
Edinaman Senior High School came in second with 94 points, Obrachire Senior High Technical School followed closely in 3rd with 47points. Aggrey Memorial School and Mozano Girls placed 4th and 5th respectively.
