Tatjana Patitz’s rise to fame in 90’s
It was a watershed event for 90s minimalism, captured by Peter Lindbergh’s black-and-white photography. But for the models themselves, the photo served as a kind of a crowning moment, cementing their status as the decade’s greatest pop cultural superstars. And it was because of this cover that George Michael approached them about appearing in his iconic Freedom! ’90 music video, lip syncing.
The German-born model’s strong-boned beauty and statuesque, athletic form made her a favourite at Chanel and Versace, where she walked the runways and appeared in advertising campaigns for both brands. However, she kept a low profile by relocating to California, far from the fashion industry’s social scene. In 2019, Patitz was shot for Vogue alongside her son Jonah Johnson. Who was Tatjana Patitz?
Patitz was born to an Estonian mother and a German father in Hamburg, and she and her family later relocated to Skanör, a coastal town in southern Sweden. She began riding horses competitively at the age of four and went on to place third in an elite model competition in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1983. A trip to Paris and a trial employment period were the prizes.
Despite growing up in the same era as some of the most renowned models in the world—it was also in 1990 that Linda Evangelista declared her peers wouldn’t wake up for less than $10,000 (£8,200) a day—Patitz opted to buy a ranch in the West rather than settle in New York or Paris.
She dabbled in acting for a while and had a small role in Sean Connery’s film Rising Sun. She developed an interest in conservation efforts. And became one of the models featured in Peta’s now-iconic “We’d rather go naked than wear fur” campaign.
