PTA Council of Ghana Opposes Registration of SHS Students for 2020 Election 

The National Council of Parent Teacher Associations of Ghana says it is unhappy with the Electoral Commission’s decision to conduct a two-day voter registration exercise in senior high schools.

The EC set Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11, 2020 to embark on the exercise for eligible students who are 18 years and above in schools without polling stations, across the country.

For the Association, this might increase the risk of contracting the disease should the unfortunate thing happen.

President of the Association, Mr. Alexander Danso stated that during the registration, all representatives of political parties were present to observe the exercise. This increased the risk of contracting the virus should any of them be infected, hence they were not happy with the situation.

“The worse part of this is that the Electoral Commission put out that all political parties should send their representatives there. These representatives have been going round during the registration; who knows whether they also have the virus or they don’t have. If they have they are going to compound the situation. We are not too happy,” he said.

Mr. Danso  further indicated that the move by the EC is a breach of the purpose for which the students were asked to resume physical academic activities.

“Yesterday we heard that the Electoral Commission is going to conduct registration in various schools. Honestly speaking that wasn’t part of the arrangement. The arrangement was that students were going to have their revision and take their exams”

The Association says it should have been consulted before the decision was made.
