Suicide: 12-year old JHS 1 Student Hangs Himself in his Room

School last Monday morning shocked the citizenry of Aiyinabo in the Ellembelle District of the Western region after he was found dead hanging in his room, He had used his mother’s headscarf to commit the crime, the Daily Graphic has reported.

The death of the student has left the community and his parents traumatized as to what could cause a 12-year-old JHS 1 student under parental care to commit suicide.

Mother’s story

The mother of Samuel, Madam Dorcas Opoku, said on Sunday evening she heard her son and his friends playing music aloud which was unusual for students who had to sleep early and make ready for school the next day.

She added that she went to them and urged them to mute the volume of the music and further asked his son to go to bed, a directive the mother said they hesitantly adhered to.

“That was the last time we spoke last night. I did not hear from him again until this morning when I noticed that he was not awake as he usually did to prepare for school which made me curious,” she said.

Victim’s room

The mother continued that in other not for Samuel to be late for school, she went to wake him up only to spot him hanging on her headscarf in his room.

Police

The Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana Police Service, Deputy Superintendent of Police, (DSP) Ms. Olivia Ewuraabena Adiku, confirmed to the Daily Graphic that Madam Dorcas Opoku has reported the incident to the police.

“As we speak, the body of the deceased has been transferred to the Axim Hospital Morgue in the Nzema East District, and investigations are currently ongoing,” the police PRO said.
