Each year, the National Science and Maths Quiz becomes a platform for senior high schools to show off. The alumni get behind their schools in the hope of winning the competition.
Winning the NSMQ has become an academic goal most schools work to achieve every academic year.
After winning the competition five times since its inception, Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School seems to be the team to beat each year.
However, there are other first class schools that have never won the NSMQ.
Here are 10 of the first class senior high schools that have never won the NSMQ:
Wesley Girls’ Senior High School
The school was established in 1836 with 25 girls by the wife of a Methodist minister. It started as a primary school with the aim of offering girls training in reading and writing, sewing and house-keeping and spiritual development.
Wesley Girls’ High School was ranked 68th out of the top 100 best high schools in Africa by Africa Almanac in 2003, based upon quality of education, student engagement, strength and activities of alumnae, school profile, internet, and news visibility.
The Accra Academy was the first private academy to be established in the Gold Coast, present-day Ghana. The academy is one of the foremost secondary educational institutions in Ghana and operates as a non-denominational day and boarding boys’ school, located at Bubuashie, near Kaneshie in the Greater Accra Region.
Aburi Girls’ Senior High School, formerly Aburi Girls’ Secondary School, also known as ABUGISS, is a Presbyterian all-girls’ senior high boarding school located south of Aburi in the Eastern Region of Ghana. The boys school of Aburi Girls is Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School also known as “PreSec”.
Archbishop Porter Girls
The Archbishop Porter Girls’ Secondary School is a female second cycle institution in Takoradi in the Western Region of Ghana. Archbishop Porter Girls’ Secondary School is a Catholic institution within the Ghana Public Education System. While it welcomes girls of all religious denominations.
St Mary’s Senior High School
St Mary’s Senior High School is an all female second cycle institution in Korle Gonno in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana.
Notre Dame High School was established on 28 September 1987 by the cooperative efforts of the then Catholic Bishop of Sunyani, Reverend James Kwadwo Owusu and the School Sisters of Notre Dame, Reverend Sister Dorez Mehrtens and Chiefs and people of Fiapre with an initial number of 37 females.
The first cramped temporary premises of the school were in a renovated technical school near St. Patrick’s Primary and Junior Secondary School behind the Christ the King Cathedral in Sunyani.
The school has passed under the leadership of four substantive Headmistresses, the first three of whom were School Sisters of Notre Dame. The pioneer Headmistress was Rev. Sr. Joan Schaeffer, SSND with Rev. Sr. Mary Busson SSND as the Assistant Headmistress. The two were joined by two Rev. Sisters namely Sr. Therese Nowakoski SSND and Sr. Dorothy Ann SSND and three lay personnel as the teaching staff.
The first students enrolled generally were those who would have been rejected by the well endowed schools in Ghana. The plan was to locate the school in Fiapre where the Chief and the Fiapre Community had donated the land. Progress on the Fiapre site developed very slowly due to limited funds. Construction commenced in 1992 and only in 1996 did the new Notre Dame Girls Senior High School open for classes at the present site.
The foundation stone laying ceremony was performed by the Rev. James Kwadwo Owusu, the then Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sunyani in September 1996.
Rev. Sr. Joan Bellew SSND was the Headmistress assisted by Rev. Sr. Mary Leonora Tucker, SSND. The student enrollment stood at 197.
The Headmistress who followed Rev. Sr. Joan Schaefer, SSND and pursued the traditions of the founding members were: Rev. Sr. Joan Beltew, SSND, Rev. Sr. Vivian Zolleer, SSND, Miss Margaret Lucy Donkor who handed over to Rev. Sr. Carolyn Boisabi Anyega, SSND. The student population as of the end of 2014/15 academic year was 850 students.
St Louis Senior High School
St. Louis Senior High School is a Ghanaian educational institution for girls in the Oduom suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
Bishop Herman College, sometimes abbreviated to BIHECO, is a boys-only second-cycle institution located at Kpando in the Volta Region of Ghana.
Accra Girls Senior High School is an all female second cycle institution in Accra in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. and operates as a non-denominational day and boarding school.
Maybe some of the big schools that have never won the competition can take a cue from the winning school’s playbook and show out this year.
