UEW Department of ULMEC Oversees Hassle-free End of Semester Examination on the LMS
Monitoring and Evaluation Committee (ULMEC) of UEW-LMS has successfully supervised Management’s ultimate goal of bringing the second semester of the 2019/2020 academic year to a logical conclusion, crowning it with a hassle-free end of semester examinations on the University’s Learning Management System (LMS) for the regular session.
At the end of the online academic activities for the second semester for the regular session, 65,601 students had enrolled. Of this number, 57,507 students representing 88% of the students who enrolled sat the end of semester examinations. The Committee has further made arrangements approved by the Executive Committee of the Academic Board to ensure that no student is left out of the exercise.
The University set up ULMEC on 17th March, 2020, to supervise and monitor the implementation of the modalities; and to offer technical support to students and Lecturers to ensuring a seamless transition from the traditional mode of teaching and learning to the online mode.
This followed a directive by His Excellency, the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to shut-down all universities and the subsequent directive by the Ministry of Education to continue academic activities online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
ULMEC has since been working diligently on daily basis monitoring and reviewing the implementation process. It has provided support, direction and guidance in the form of releases to lecturers and students. Indeed, by the close of June, 2020, it had issued 21 releases covering various aspects on the deployment of the LMS as the option for teaching and learning.
It also worked closely with the IT Directorate to provide technical support to students and faculty through workshops, webinars, demonstration videos, infographics among others. The Committee actively glean information from faculty and students to inform its decisions, guidelines and directives.
The Committee will be remembered for its timely and astute decision to run mandatory quizzes for all courses ahead of the mid-semester quizzes to assess the resilience of the system. The insight from the exercise made the Committee to provide comprehensive guides for the conduct of quizzes and examinations in a manner that ultimately led to a hassle-free end of semester examinations.
“This success story could be attributed to the hard work and cooperation of faculty and students. The plan for online academic work, going forward would constitute an integral part of the University. It will constitute not less than 40% of each semester’s course work, Chairman for ULMEC, Prof. Andy Ofori-Birikorang, averred.
