The University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) held a virtual orientation for undergraduate students for the 2020/2021 academic year via Zoom on 13th January,2021.

Professor Justice N. Bawole, Dean of UGBS, commenced the orientation with an opening remark as he welcomed the freshmen into the School. In his statement, he intimated, “You are coming into a school that competes favourably across the world in terms of quality learning and faculty. I, therefore, urge you to take advantage of this opportunity, go online, check the profile of all the faculty members and ensure to make friends with them as our faculty are extremely friendly people who love to engage with their students. We are here to ensure that you get the best of education”.

He further urged the students to respect each other as they all will have to work hand in hand during their online studies. The Dean concluded by stating that the students should count themselves lucky for making it into UGBS and should be proud of that.

Mrs Selina Saaka, the Assistant Registrar at UGBS, presented on the Academic House Keeping Issues of the School. She gave a brief history of the University of Ghana and indicated that the University’s mandate is to provide education and facilitate research for all people. She revealed that the University is currently made up of four colleges, which includes the College of Humanities, and UGBS is one of the schools domiciled in the College of Humanities. She further took the students through the academic activities of the Business School and advised them to adhere to the rules and regulations stipulated in the student’s handbook. She further instructed students to try and adapt to the teaching platforms that the university will be using for teaching, such as Sakai, Zoom, YouTube, among others.

Mr David Tetteh Odjeawo, the Senior Assistant Librarian, gave the next presentation on the resources the School has in the library unit. He stated that the cataloguing and classification of scholarly works will make it easy to access online studies. He also made it clear that students who would like to physically visit the library, must adhere to the COVID-19 protocols to protect themselves and others as well.

The President of the Business House Junior Common Room (BHJCR) delivered the last presentation. In his speech, he entreated the fresh students to be confident, vigilant and be open to opportunities in all their endeavours.

The orientation ended as the online platform was opened for questions from students and answers from the facilitators.
