Students of the University of Ghana will not go to the polls this year to elect new executives for its Students Representative Council (SRC), Speaker of the General Assembly of the SRC has announced.
He says that the General Assembly has invoked Article 25 of the SRC constitution, which spells out what must be done when it is envisaged that it is impracticable to hold elections in a particular academic year.
This means that interim SRC leaders will be appointed to lead the Council for the 2020/2021 academic year.
Speaker of the General Assembly, Emmanuel Owusu Ampem, made the announcement in an interview on the Leadership Focus show.
He explained that the cancellation of the SRC election was the transitional roadmap they presented to the Dean of Students.
“The roadmap has been provided that we shall invoke article 25, and we shall follow the dictates of the Constitution. That has been done and that is what we are following,” he stated on Sunday, June 28, 2020.
Reaction of aspirants
Aspirants are shocked by the decision of the SRC to rather appoint interim leaders rather than making efforts to organize an election.
They are even more surprised to be hearing it for the first time on air.
The aspirants are also counting their loses as all inputs, including financial expenses, they made to be the favorites of the electorates have gone without a chance of realizing their ambitions.
One of such is Sampson Tagbor, an SRC Presidential aspirant.
He is challenging the authority of the General Assembly to invoke Article 25 of the SRC constitution.
Sampson is also believes that it is premature for Article 25 to be invoked as the semester is yet to officially end.
General Secretary aspirant, Nervisa Oteng-Ababio, who is among those with campaign posters at almost every part of campus, is unhappy with her input going waste.
She sides with Sampson Tagbor’s assertion that the elections can still be organized.
For the office of Treasurer the Constitution provides that the head of the Finance Committee shall act in that stead but since the current SRC finance committee head is in final year, it remains to be seen what would be done.
But treasurer aspirants, Emmanuel Achio and Nicholas Armah remarks on the move by the SRC are no different from those of Sampson Tagbor and Nervisa Oteng-Ababio.
Akuafo Hall JCR President appointed as interim SRC President
In line with the provision of Article 25, Junior Common Room president of the Akuafo Hall, Nana Amo Ntow Fianko has been appointed as the acting SRC President.
Mensah Sarbah Hall JCR Secretary, Ruby Nkansah has also been appointed as acting SRC General Secretary.
These appointments were announced by the current SRC President, Isaac Agyemang.
An official communique is, however, yet to be released.
