The University of Ghana has announced to newly admitted students who have secured accommodation on campus that they will have to reapply for residence in subsequent years. The university says that the bed they have been allocated this year is only for the 2020/2021 academic year.

This notice is in the second paragraph of their residential admission letter.

“This bed allocation is for one academic year only – you will have to re-apply for residence in
subsequent years,” it reads

Previously, students who were able to secure residential admission were able to hold on to it for their entire four year period of study.

It is yet to be confirmed if this new arrangement is part of efforts by the university to mitigate its accommodation challenges.

Meanwhile, fresh students who have gained residential application this year have been asked to confirm their acceptance of the offer by making necessary payments within 48hours.

In failing to do so, they will lose the bed allocated to them.

University of Ghana opens a residential application portal

At 10:00 am on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, the residential application portal for newly admitted students of the University was opened.

Ahead of the opening of the portal, the University published the schedule of residential fees for the 2020/2021 academic year.

Twelve residential facilities, including private ones, have been listed, with their charges ranging between GHC 367.00 and GHC 4,860.00.

The number of bed spaces available to accommodate fresh students for this year is unclear but the University’s decision to run a modular system for the 2020/2021 academic year is expected to addressing the university’s perennial accommodation challenges.

Head of Halls at the University, Dr Charles Wiafe-Akenten has already told UniversNews that the university is in a position to provide accommodation to more fresh students.

He indicated that there will be enough beds for them.
