The Management of the University of Ghana made a decision to adopt paying residential fees on a semester basis. A group of concerned students’ associations, as they call themselves, have kicked against this decision considering the effect the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the economy.
Crispus Akomah, the leader of the group also accused the University of doing little to solve accommodation challenges facing the university and the entire student body.
The group also made a case for students who will be residing in the University of Ghana Enterprise Limited Hostels stating that although their stay had been cut short, they will be willing to pay the fee in a petition to the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu.
“The residential fees for UGEL Halls for instance as proposed by management is GHC820 for a period of six to eight weeks on campus which translates to GHC1640 for two semesters. Hitherto, students paid GHC1790 to spend upwards of twenty-six weeks on campus in two semesters. This compared to the GHC820 charged for six (6) per semester in the next academic year is outrageous, unfair, and inconsiderate given the economic impact of the pandemic on the finances of both students and guardians,” part of the petition reads.
